Car boot sales are a popular family day out, but busy vehicle-filled venues do carry some risks worth planning for. Here’s how to stay safe.
In the Car Park and Pitch Areas
- Hold young children’s hands in areas where cars are actively parking or unloading
- Follow marshal instructions and designated pedestrian routes where provided
- Be aware that ground conditions (mud, uneven grass, gravel) can be a trip hazard, especially with pushchairs
Buying Safely for Children
- Toys: check for small, detachable parts that could be a choking hazard for young children, and inspect battery compartments for secure screws/covers
- Car seats and prams: avoid buying second-hand car seats where the history and any past accidents are unknown, as their structural safety can’t be verified
- Cots and furniture: check for recalled models, loose fittings, or damaged slats before buying for a child’s room
- Electrical toys: test where possible, and check plugs and cables for damage
General Family Safety
- Agree a meeting point in case anyone gets separated in a busy market
- Keep prams and pushchairs clear of vehicle access routes
- Bring sun protection or wet-weather gear, as sales run rain or shine at many venues
- Keep hand sanitiser handy, especially before eating any food bought on site
Money and Belongings
- Keep purses, wallets, and phones in zipped or front-facing bags in crowded areas
- Agree a spending limit with children in advance to avoid overspending or disagreements
